Small Businesses Across California Do Their Part to Save Energy
For National Energy Efficiency Day, Energy Upgrade California shares stories of six small businesses that are fighting climate change
Energy Upgrade California® (EUC), the statewide program encouraging Californians to save energy, is in the business of helping small businesses. In honor of National Energy Efficiency Day, October 6, 2021, Energy Upgrade California is working closely with the California Green Business Network and Chamber of Commerce organizations from across the state to remind small business owners that going green has benefits for their business and the environment.
Energy efficiency isn’t always at the top of the priority list for small businesses who are faced with making tough decisions on operational needs. However, being energy efficient can help businesses reduce their energy use which impacts their bottom line and the environment.

When we make small changes to our energy use, we can breathe cleaner air, fight climate change, protect ecosystems and wildlife and create positive, lasting change in California. Below are ways to save energy to fight climate change:
- Replace Incandescent Bulbs With LEDs: Don’t let incandescent bulbs fool you. They typically last about 1,000 hours whereas a 12-watt LED bulb can last up to 25,000 hours.
- Install Motion Sensor Lights: Reduce the amount of electricity you use by never forgetting to turn off a light again.
- Use a Smart Thermostat: Automatically manage the temperature of your building and save an extra 10% on annual heating and cooling costs.
- Change Air Filters Regularly: Swapping out dirty air filters with new ones increases airflow throughout your HVAC system, helping it run more efficiently.
- Get an Energy Audit: Requesting an energy assessment from your local energy provider can help identify any opportunities to save energy and money.
- Become a Certified Green Business: Don’t know where to start? Check with your local energy provider and see how your business can reduce its carbon footprint.
