Students at Merryhill School in San Jose Celebrate Black History Month
Afrique Sogue Percussion and Dance performed for preschool and elementary students
On Feb. 2, students at Merryhill Preschool and Merryhill Elementary School in San Jose enjoyed an interactive West African drumming performance during an assembly to celebrate the start of Black History Month. The performance was put on by Afrique Sogue Percussion and Dance, a Bay Area performing arts company that celebrates the West African dance and musical culture. During the interactive event, students were taught key phrases, sang along to songs and even played some of the drums. Through this event, students had the opportunity to learn about the rich diversity of the world’s cultures while interacting with music and practicing self-expression.
