Homicide Rates Have Increased In These Bay Area Cities: Report
A pair of Northern California communities were listed among cities that saw a rapid increase in violence in the last two years.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Since 2020, homicide rates have been inching up across the U.S. — and they are still on the rise, according to a new report.
These rates have risen by an average of 18 percent in 50 of the most populated U.S. cities, according to a recent report from Wallethub.
In the financial advice blog's list of 50 cities, four Golden State cities were named — including Oakland and San Francisco.

On Monday evening, one day after multiple shootings unfolded in Oakland, the police department said in 2022 alone, it saw 68 homicides in the city, down from 75 at this same time last year.
Oakland was listed at no. 31 on Wallethub's ranking of 50 cities. The city recorded 4.5 homicide cases per capita in the second quarter of 2022. Oakland received a score of 29.89.

The San Francisco Police Department has reported 27 homicide cases since Jan. 1, a 10 percent decrease from the same timeline last year.
San Francisco ranked no. 35 on Wallethub's list, receiving a total score of 26.02. The city recorded 1.71 homicide cases per capita in the second quarter of 2022.
The report also listed Los Angeles and Riverside as two other cities that saw a rapid increase in homicide rates.
In his State of the Union speech, President Joe Biden vowed to lower crime rates in 2022 and beyond.
"I’ve worked on these issues a long time. I know what works: Investing in crime preventionand community police officers who’ll walk the beat, who’ll know the neighborhood, and who can restore trust and safety. So let’s not abandon our streets. Or choose between safety and equal justice," he said in March.
Wallethub used data collected from the U.S. Census Bureau and Local Crime Statistics to create the report.
