Top 10 Ranking: San Francisco's Park System

Every resident in San Francisco lives within a 10 minute walk of a city park.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — San Francisco's park system was ranked seventh among the nation's largest cities by The Trust for Public Land, according to the organization.

The non-profit organization evaluated park systems in the 100 largest U.S. cities based on four criteria: access to residents, acreage, investment, and amenities.

Since all San Francisco residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park, the city received perfect marks from The Trust for Public Land for accessibility.

The Trust for Public Land said it uses computer-mapping technology to create digital maps that show obstacles to access such as highways between residents and their local parks.

The organization also commended San Francisco for reserving 20 percent of its area for parks, but said the city's small median park size of 1.3 acres damaged its overall rating.
