Video: Windsurfer Crashes Into Whale In San Francisco Bay

A video posted a week ago online shows the moment a windsurfer gets caught off guard by a breaching whale.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A video posted online shows the moment a windsurfer collides with a breaching whale in the San Francisco Bay.

The incident comes as whales make their migration journey through the San Francisco Bay Area and up to Alaska. So far, four whales have died during the journey, including one that was killed by a boat strike on March 17.

Video posted on Instagram by @fir3nsalt shows the windsurfer traveling through the water with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

Just a few seconds in, a whale appears to breach, spraying water up, and causing the windsurfer to fall into the bay.

For a brief moment, the windsurfer can no longer be seen as the whale appears to dive back down into the water. The windsurfer then reemerges from the water with their equipment.

"I come here often and never seen humpback whales!" the person who published the video said. "This afternoon there were two roaming on our side coming up for air and as soon as a windsurfer collided with one they disappeared!"

It's unclear whether anyone was injured during the incident.
