SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A group of community members and passersby in San Francisco Sunday broke the Guinness World Record for the largest human flower formation, officials with the Asian Art Museum said.

A group from Rochester, New York held the old record until 2,405 people came together at noon in Civic Center Plaza to form a lotus flower.

The previous record consisted of 2,297 people.

The effort was meant to celebrate the 50th anniversary of San Francisco's Summer of Love and the museum's "Flower Power" exhibition, museum officials said.

The officials were hoping 3,000 people would come together. 4,000 people signed up.

People who participated donned either green or pink ponchos. At 12:45 p.m. high school students formed the perimeter of the flower, while others formed the center.

People in green ponchos formed the stem and pad while people in pink ponchos formed the bloom, according to museum officials.

But at around 1 p.m., organizers became worried when it didn't seem as if they were going to break the record, so they asked passersby to join in.

At 1:20 p.m. a new record was verified. A plaque recognizing the record will be placed in the Asian Art
Museum and each participant received a poster. A drone took a photo of the human flower formation.
