A Magical Beginning with Pre-Ballet

For many children, Pre-Ballet is their first independent activity. SJDT’s experienced teachers understand how to make that experience positive, encouraging, and fun. Children learn foundational ballet concepts while exploring movement in an environment where they can build friendships and feel proud of their progress.
Pre-Ballet also provides a pathway into SJDT’s youth academy, allowing dancers to build strong foundations before progressing into more structured ballet training.

What truly distinguishes SJDT is the journey from the classroom to the stage. Students have opportunities to apply what they learn through professionally presented productions, including San Jose’s longest-running production of The Nutcracker. These experiences teach responsibility, teamwork, perseverance, and stagecraft while giving young dancers memories that can last a lifetime.
Whether a student hopes to pursue dance professionally or simply wants to enjoy ballet, SJDT provides meaningful training and encourages each dancer to reach their individual potential.
Ballet for Adults at Every Experience Level
Ballet is not only for children. San Jose Dance Theatre’s Adult Open Division welcomes dancers who are stepping into the studio for the first time, returning after many years, or looking for advanced-level training.
Adult classes provide a supportive way to improve strength, posture, flexibility, coordination, and musicality. They also offer something increasingly valuable: time to step away from daily responsibilities, focus fully on movement, and participate in an encouraging artistic community.
SJDT offers multiple class levels so adults can find instruction appropriate for their experience and goals. No childhood dance background is required to begin. Adult dancers are encouraged to learn at their own pace while enjoying the physical and creative benefits of ballet.
More Than a Dance School
San Jose Dance Theatre is deeply rooted in the San Jose arts community. Since 1964, the nonprofit organization has provided ballet education, performances, and outreach programs for generations of dancers and audiences.
That history is paired with a forward-looking approach to training. SJDT is committed to creating a positive environment where dancers feel supported, challenged, and inspired. Students receive serious instruction without losing the sense of joy and connection that makes dance meaningful.
At SJDT, dancers do more than learn steps. They develop confidence, discipline, creativity, resilience, and friendships. They become part of a community built around a shared love of dance.
