Health Officials received confirmation this week that four recent Bay Area deaths were the result of influenza. Two deaths were in San Mateo County, and one each in San Francisco and Sonoma counties.
All of the victims were under the age of 65. Only flu deaths in people under 65 are reported to the state.

Dr. Scott Morrow, San Mateo County Health Officer, recommends that everyone get a flu shot. In a prepared statement, Dr. Morrow said, “Even though the flu shot is not a perfect match for all of this year’s flu viruses, it still remains the best defense against the flu. The vaccine will still protect you against other strains of flu that are circulating, and can reduce the severity of flu symptoms if you do get sick.”
In addition to getting vaccinated, officials recommend hand washing and good health habits. People who are ill can help stop the spread of germs:

• Limit contact with others—stay home from work or school
• Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing
• Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based rub
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue.
