Out of Town About Town
Today’s About Town comes to you from Seattle, Washington, on a layover to our flight to Washington, D.C. to spend a few days in our nation’s capitol before enjoying a family reunion on the Shore. The Atlantic Shore, that is. According to our mother, there really was no other shore. For me it is a tough call, the wide open beaches and slightly warmer water is a draw, but our coastline here is so incredibly rugged and beautiful it is simply breath-taking at every turn along Highway 1.

If you do head to the beach this week here on our side of the country take caution, a shark was sighted too close for comfort around Stinson Beach by a Coast Guard helicopter. Swimmers are being restricted to going no deeper than knee height until Thursday.

It is a very sad, sad day, , the reinvented restaurant that was once Fork, has succumbed to the economy and closed its doors. It was a definite “list topper” for us, having dined at Fork once years ago. However, along with so many others, dinners out are fewer and farther between in these tougher times and restaurants are feeling the pinch, or shall I say strangle?
I know I am not the only one that is disheartened at the loss of an incredible restaurant that truly strived and succeeded in creating amazing meals from very local sources. Charles Low and Oliver Knell will be sorely missed after holding the amazing spot at 198 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. for 10 years. We wish them the very best in their next venture.
Grounded Gioia
Speaking of local sources, there is a lovely boutique in downtown San Anselmo, , owned and operated by Joy Sassoon, a Fairfax resident. The shop is filled with incredible clothes and accessories and Joy takes great pride in purchasing her lovely items knowing that over 80 percent are made in the United States. The rest are purchased from fair-trade countries as Joy is adamant against supporting poor working conditions -- better known as sweathouses. Joy was becoming very discouraged by all of the poor quality items made in other parts of the world and made a conscious choice to make a difference in her immediate world and business. According to Joy, “I sell clothes one can just "Be" in...lifestyle items from dresses to yoga wear.” Fabulous jeans, beautiful dresses, lovely tops, and accessories to go with everything, I highly recommend it.
Budding Artists Blooming
Our very own local artist, Michael Feldman, who displays his incredible paintings in the teeny tiny little shop in San Anselmo at the bridge crossing at 630 San Anselmo Ave., is sharing his amazing skills and knowledge with local budding artists about town. In the cool of the morning, groups of kids gather for art camp in front of his store and then head off to various destinations about town to work on sketches, water colors and acrylics. By the end of the week masterpieces are made -- and we aren’t talking about the crayola ones that we all know and love, these are real canvas paintings that are well thought-out and worthy of any wall. We can’t wait to have our daughter make one of her own when we are back on familiar ground!
Happy Summer Everyone, it has truly and completely arrived, enjoy!
