Expert Panel Discusses Water Crisis Thursday, May 7
Learn about solutions to conserve, reuse & protect our most precious resource from a panel of local experts.
Sustainable Fairfax is hosting a panel discussion with local experts to address the current water crisis. Panelists will provide an update on the drought and offer practices and polices that should be implemented to improve our relationship with water, from implementing home-scale conservation practices to localizing our water infrastructure through innovative engineering solutions.
“We conserve and reuse water not because we are in a drought, but because we are citizen’s of the planet and it is our moral and ethical duty to be in sync with the water cycle,” notes panelist Elizabeth Dougherty, founder of Wholly H20.

PANEL:
MODERATOR: Larry Bragman, Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) board member representing Fairfax and surrounds.
· THE WATER CYCLE
Elizabeth Dougherty, Founder and Executive Director of Wholly H2O, will give an overview of the human and natural water cycles and practical solutions for syncing the two.
· GEOLOGIC ISSUES
Jane Nielson, Co-Founder of Sonoma Water Information Group (SWiG) and board member for O.W.L. Foundation (OWL), will discuss geologic aspects of the water supply.
· COUNTY REPORT
Dan Carney, MMWD Water Conservation Manager, will provide the latest update on the drought, Governor Brown’s recent mandate and MMWD’s water restrictions, and how to get free home MMWD water consults.
· WHAT CAN CITIES DO?
John Leys, Sherwood Design Engineers, will talk about engineering innovations that empower cities to support localized water systems.
· HOMESCALE WATER CONSERVATION
Trathen Heckman, President of Transition US and Founding Executive Director of Daily Acts, will talk about home-scale solutions and community resiliency.
Participating organizations will offer information and resources on how to conserve water and help mitigate the impacts of the drought.
Doors open at 6:30pm. The panel discussion begins at 7:00pm, followed by questions and answers.
The event is sponsored by Sustainable Fairfax, Fairfax Parks and Recreation and New Belgium Brewing Company.
