Fire Rips Through Marin Apartment Complex

Fire officials say a total of 17 people were displaced as a result of the blaze.

SAN RAFAEL, CA- Firefighters are investigating Monday the cause of a local fire that broke out in San Rafael.

According to San Rafael Fire Chief Chris Gray, the fire was first reported around noon at 142 Park Street.

"Upon arrival, fire crews found an upstairs apartment unit engulfed in flames," he said in a news release. "Thanks to the work of fast acting fire crews, within approximately 15 minutes, the fire was under control. Crews were able to confine the fire to two apartment units."

Though the fire was contained to those two units, smoke and water damage was reported in some other dwellings. A total of 13 adults and four children where subsequently displaced by the fire, according to Gray.

The fire chief said crews had some difficulties with fighting the fire.

"Firefighters were challenged as the apartment structure was set back from the street behind a large single family dwelling," he said. "Additionally, there was only a single narrow driveway for crews to utilize."

In total, five engines, a ladder truck and two paramedic ambulances responded to the scene. Red Cross representatives also came out to assist those displaced with housing, food and clothing.

No injuries were reported.
