Man Dies in Weekend Drowning Near Marin Headlands

One man drowned and another man was rescued after waves swept them into the ocean in the Marin Headlands Sunday afternoon, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.

An onlooker on shore near the southern end of Rodeo Beach called 911 around 12:25 p.m. to report that two fishermen had been swept off of some rocks into the water, according to Coast Guard and National Park Service officials.

One of the victims managed to climb onto some rocks far from shore while the second man remained unaccounted for. A boat crew rescued the man stranded on the rocks and brought him to shore, where he was shaken up but in good condition, U.S. Coast Guard Command Duty Officer Joe Ford said.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew located the second man, who was unresponsive but had a pulse. Emergency responders performed CPR on the man but he died after he was returned to shore, Ford said.

He said he did not know where the man was from nor his age. A Mandarin interpreter was summoned to translate for the surviving victim, Ford said.

The officer said high surf warnings were in effect at numerous Bay Area beaches this weekend from the North Bay to the Monterey Bay area.

“There are some sneaker waves rolling in and catching people off guard,” Ford said.

Beachgoers throughout the Bay Area were advised to take caution throughout Sunday as large surf and strong rip currents are expected to continue, according to the National Weather Service.
