Sky Ranch Horses to be Evicted

MOST's 'Save Sky Ranch' Open Space Fundraising Campaign was Successful but Horses To Be Evicted - May Return in Future

Marin County Open Space District has informed the horse owners at Sky Ranch in Fairfax that they are recommending that the horses be evicted and the horse owners will need to remove their horses and personal property from the ranch by Jan 15th, 2015.

Carl Somers, Chief of Planning and Acquisition for the Marin County Open Space District (MCOSD), cited in his letter to the Sky Ranch Horse Association (SRHA) that December 1st was the deadline for MCOSD to advise the Marin Open Space Trust to waive the eviction notice in their purchase contract. ”..given the inflexible nature of the acquisition schedule and the liabilities involved, it (eviction) is the best reply we can make.,” Mr. Somers wrote.

He then said that he looks forward to continuing discussions with the Sky Ranch Horse Association and hopes that MCOSD and the horse association might reach an agreement in the future, that will retain an equestrian boarding facility at the ranch.

Many in the community who donated to Marin County Open Space’s ‘Save Sky Ranch’ campaign assumed that their money would go toward saving the horses and the historic ranch. Supporters of the horses staying at Sky Ranch are being asked to attend the Fairfax Town Council meeting this Wednesday, Dec 3rd at 7pm, 46 Park Rd in Fairfax. At the meeting, item 7 on the agenda is approval of the transfer of $50,000 in Measure A funds to MOST for acquisition of Sky Ranch as open space.
