Meet Directors of Toxic Hot Seat this Friday

Sustainable Fairfax and Moms Advocating Sustainability (MOMAS) are hosting a screening of the documentary “Toxic Hot Seat” on Friday, May 2nd. Directors Kirby Walker and James Redford, son of actor Robert Redford, will appear in person to discuss the making of the film and answer audience questions.

"We are compelled to share the stories and give a voice to those inspiring individuals working for justice who often go unheard,” the directors said in a issued statement. "In an era of depressing environmental stories that leave us feeling hopeless this is a story that we hope will outrage you and at the same time inspire you to join the movement."

The film explores a campaign of deception by the chemical and tobacco lobbies to pass and protect a 1975 California law requiring furniture to be filled with chemical flame retardants.  A group of firefighters, mothers, journalists, scientists, politicians and activists fight back to end the era of misinformation and manipulation.

“Flame retardants are ubiquitous in our homes thanks to the relentless efforts of the chemical industry, in spite of serious health consequences and lack of proof that they work to help save lives,” said Debbie Freidman, co-founder of MOMAS.  “We’ve put our kids’ health at risk for too many years.”

The event will take place at the Fairfax Women’s Club located at 46 Park Road in Fairfax. The doors will open at 7:00pm and the film will begin at 7:30pm. For more information, please visit www.sustainablefairfax.org.
