UPDATE: SF General Hospital Says Critically Injured Burn Victims Include Two Women in their 80s; Other Victims Include Man in his 50s and Woman in her 60s

Long recovery process lies ahead for burn patients, doctors say.

UPDATE: San Francisco General Hospital released an update on San Bruno burn victims, stating that among four patients, three are listed as critical and one is in serious condition. Two of the critical patients are in their 80s; one is a male in his 50s. The patient in serious condition is a female in her 60s.

While officials aren't yet releasing the names of the injured or the missing, one family from South San Francisco arrived at the Saint Francis burn center this morning to see their son, who they said is among four critically hurt gas explosion victims being treated there.

According to Kayla Genochio, her 19-year-old cousin, Skyline College student Joseph Ruigomez, was sitting down to watch a football game with his girlfriend in his San Bruno home at the time of Thursday's blast.

Shortly before, Ruigomez's mother had  left the house with her daughter to make a quick trip to the store.

Ruigomez's girlfriend, 20-year-old Jessica Morales, has not been found, and her friends told Patch Friday afternoon that they fear she is among the four people who died in the blast.

Ruigomez' uncle Kevin Schroeder, who sent Patch a message on Facebook, said Ruigomez is on a ventilator with burns on more than 50 percent of his body, including second-degree burns to his face and third-degree burns on his arms and body.

Schroeder said his nephew, who was found collapsed on a neighbor's lawn, will likely be hospitalized for a month and in rehabilitation for at least six months.

Maria Deleon, a family friend, was at Morales' family's home earlier today.  Her son, Marco Flores, was a good friend of Morales from Capuchino High School. She remembered Morales as a talkative and friendly girl with a beautiful smile who used to come over and do karaoke with her daughter on the Wii.

"Her personality just made you fall in love with her," Deleon said. "We considered her part of our family: we called each other mom and daughter because she was always here with our son and always part of our family."

Morales graduated from Peninsula High School in 2008 and aspired to be a fashion designer.  On her Facebook page, now filled with messages of shock and sorrow by her friends, her profile photo shows her and Ruigomez with their head close together.  Her personal statement says, "im infatuated," with a heart symbol at the end.

While Deleon was visiting with Morales' family, the coroner arrived to collect dental records. A burned body was found in a shed in the woods; according to Ruigomez's family, he last saw her running toward a shed.

In an press conference this morning at the burn center, physician Michel Kulick said doctors will have a better idea by Sunday on the patients' conditions but said they face a long recovery process.

Three of them have burns on more than 50 percent of their bodies; the fourth on 40 percent. Most of the burns are to the upper bodies. Kulick said he could not comment on the gender of the patients or release their ages. According to one TV report, one of the severely hurt patients is a child.

After the initial resuscitation of a burn victim, the next step for doctors is to remove dead tissue and then, eventually, do skin grafts followed by plastic surgery. The entire process can take months and involves a care team including a physical therapist, infection specialist and plastic surgeon.
