Newly Elected San Bruno Mayor Rico E. Medina’s comments to the San Bruno Community.
I want to again thank my colleagues and friends Mayor Ruane and Vice-Mayor Ibarra for their service and dedication to our community.
I want to offer my congratulations to Laura and Michael on their election and to Annette and Marco for stepping forward to run for office which is never easy to do.
I want to thank my family, extended family, friends, and campaign committee, some who have been with me from my 2005 council run to now.
I want to thank our honor guard from the San Bruno Police Dept and our Chief.
I want to thank the Parkside strings ensemble and their musical director, the Capuchino choir, the Capuchino band and their musical director. I am glad we are able to show off the success of their music talent and the pride Parkside and CAP bring to our community.
I wish to thank my employer who has been extremely supportive in my serving on the City Council and running for Mayor. When I met them and interviewed over 5 years ago they were made aware of my service in San Bruno. Service to community is important to them and they told me not to worry and if I needed to leave due to an emergency or to fulfill my role, to do so. There are not many employers who would be that supportive or understanding and what is best is that they have welcomed me as family and I consider them the same.
I have been privileged to serve as your City Council member for the last 12 years and now am honored to be your elected Mayor.
Tonight I stand before you as your 6th elected Mayor for our City. This is obviously not a first but there are some other firsts:
This is the first time your Mayor is a former employee for the City of San Bruno.
As such I realize, understand, and appreciate the job you do. The council can set policy and a budget all day long but staff are the ones that takes the action and makes it happen. We as a council and community need to realize that they have an amount of resources in which to implement those polices and priorities. We need to use those resources in the most effective manner possible. In 2009 as a councilmember I went around to the various departments to thank the staff for accepting a furlough to reduce the budget and avoid any layoffs during those difficult economic times that all jurisdictions were facing. Tomorrow I will be going back to visit and say hello to the departments but this time as Mayor and this time to say thank you and show my support and appreciation for the job they do.
This is the first time your Mayor is a former Capuchino Graduate and proud alumni.
The reason I wanted to come here to have the installation is the connection each of your newly elects have to CAP and to show support to our schools and what they offer. I was appointed by the City Council as a sophomore at CAP to the Citizens Crime Prevention Committee and have been serving in various other commission, boards and committees for over 37 years. This is where as student body president I told the students that I would represent all the 1,500 plus students equally. I now return as your elected Mayor to give that same pledge and my commitment to the over 43,000 plus residents and will do the same.
As we wake up tomorrow everything will not be solved or resolved.
There will be important decisions that need to be made and tough issues that we need to tackle. It will take all of us to sit, listen and offer solutions and during the process to respect each other’s comments and points of views.
We can hope that things will be different or better, but hope is not a plan nor does it balance our City budget nor will it move this City forward.
We must come together through communication, cooperation and collaboration.
I therefore am asking that early next year the City Council come together of course with community imput to share their ideas, set goals and a vision for 2018. We as a council need to set those priorities so the 5 of us are not going 10 different ways which in the end no progress is made on anything and our City will not move forward. We must set our goals and find ways to measure our success and find better efficiencies to improve our operations and service to our residents.
While we have had differences over community issues or changes, I have lived in San Bruno my entire life, and have seen those changes over the years.
What never changes for me is our sense of community spirit, pride and the collective willingness to assist our fellow residents in times of need.
It is thanks to this school, this community and all those that have touched my life through their mentoring, coaching and yes scolding. Because of this community, I stand before you a stronger man and a better person and prepared to serve as your Mayor.
My goal is to move this City forward and for us to leave it better than we find it today. We want you involved and engaged as we set our goals and objectives going forward. It you feel your voice does not matter or ideas are not worth sharing, I want you back at the table, I want you back and a part of the discussion that will move our City forward in a positive direction. One person can and does make a difference.
Thank you for this honor. I offer you my continued dedication and commitment to the City I am proud of and love, the “City with the Heart”.
