County of San Mateo Honored for Performance Reporting

Data-driven management earns excellence award from international association

Redwood City — The County of San Mateo’s data driven management and reporting efforts have been rewarded with a Certificate of Excellence in Performance Management from the International City/County Management Association (ICMA). This is the second year the ICMA has recognized the County’s performance management efforts. “Performance management is important. It is part of our internal dialogue about how to improve the daily business of government, fiscal transparency, how well we execute our functions, and more importantly how we prepare and develop staff to meet the current and future needs of our residents. I’m proud of the work done by our line staff, supervisors, managers and budget analysts across the County,” said County Manager John Maltbie. Certificates are based on established criteria and awarded at three levels of which excellence — the level earned by the County — is the highest.

Excellence recipients not only collect and verify data to ensure reliability but also track and report key outcomes, survey residents and local government employees, incorporate data into performance dashboards or other visual communications and foster the development of a performance culture throughout their organizations, according to the ICMA.

The County shares its performance dashboards for individual for individual departments and programs, Shared Vision 2025 and Measure K initiatives at https://performance.smcgov.org

The County also shares the data it collects and verifies with the public through its Open San Mateo County portal at https://data.smcgov.org

The County will receive its award in September at the 104th Annual ICMA Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
