Exhibit To Open TOMORROW September 19, 2017, Entitled Sketches From World War I

Recognizing America’s entry into World War I in 1917, 100 years ago, the San Mateo County History Museum will open an exhibit on September 19, 2017, entitled Sketches from World War I, which will feature Peninsula soldier Alvin Page Colby’s art created when he was training at Fort Lewis and then serving in France as a cook in the 91st “Wild West” Infantry Division.

Colby was a Burlingame resident working at Wisnom’s Hardware when he joined the Army. His letters home often included comic sketches about daily life, many of which will be featured in the exhibit. After the War he returned to Burlingame and continued working at the Wisnom’s store in San Mateo.
These sketches have never been on display for public viewing before.

The San Mateo County History Museum is located at 2200 Broadway within the 107-year-old “Old Courthouse” in Redwood City. It features exhibits related to the use of natural resources, suburban development, ethnic experience and entrepreneurial achievement on the Peninsula from the time of the Ohlone Indian through today.
