Exhibit Opening: Noah’s Ark: San Mateo’s Historic Restaurant

In time for Black History Month (February 1 through February 28, 2018), the San Mateo County History Museum will open Noah’s Ark: San Mateo’s Historic Restaurant on January 23. African American restaurateur Noah Williams was an entrepreneur in the city of San Mateo. A former railroad chef, Williams moved to San Mateo around 1920 and established Noah’s Cafeteria at 139 South B Street. San Francisco residents would come to Williams’ restaurant and line up around the street for a taste of his famous baked ham or fried chicken. In 1923, Williams moved to a larger location on Third Avenue and called his new restaurant Noah’s Ark. The landmark restaurant was a huge success until the Depression hit, forcing it to close in 1931.

Noah’s Ark was renowned not only for its food but for its décor. Huge paintings of African animals hung on the walls. A selection of these paintings, including a nine-foot tall painting of a giraffe, will be on display at the Museum, which is located at 2200 Broadway in Redwood City.
