Flood Park EIR And Other San Mateo County Park Updates -- posted 1 Nov 2017
EIR comment deadline 16 Nov 2017

Article Source: County of San Mateo CA

These last few months have been difficult as one tragedy after another has struck. Our hearts break for our neighbors in the North Bay, Las Vegas, Puerto Rico, Texas and beyond. At the same time, our hearts fill with gratitude and love as we witness how people come together to help each other out. And as we take care of our neighbors, families, and even complete strangers, we must remember to take care of ourselves. Take care of yourself and remember the parks are here for you- their healing energy might be just the medicine you (and I) need. A community meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 1 at 7pm at the Menlo Park Senior Center (100 Terminal Avenue).Getting to Know Every Trail in our San Mateo County Park System
Flood Park is one park in a 21-park system. This system includes two historic sites, Sanchez Adobe and the Woodside Store. There is so much to know and love about our San Mateo County Parks, and I look forward to sharing it all with you. My most recent hike took me to the Ridge Trail on San Bruno Mountain. The views were awesome from the Pacific Ocean to Mt. Diablo. If you would like to see how San Francisco and the Peninsula are laid out, there is no better vantage point. I share highlights from my efforts to hike every trail in our park system this year.
Coming up: two great events and a request from the Friends of Huddart and Wunderlich Parks host their exhibit grand opening and continuation of their Folger Stable Speaker Series on Sunday, November 12 at 3pm. During the early 1850s, the redwood forests surrounding the community of Woodside were alive with lumbermen hoping to “strike it rich.” A “timber beast” had to possess tremendous grit to fell the world’s tallest trees with almost no mechanical equipment. Free tickets here.
Holidays with the Friends is a free family event hosted by the Friends of Huddart and Wunderlich Parks on Saturday, December 2 from 1-4pm at the Historic Folger Stable at Wunderlich Park. There will be pony rides, cookie decorating and Santa.
If you treasure local historic places and want to share them with others, consider volunteering at the Folger Stable Carriage Room Museum in Wunderlich Park on weekends. The museum, located within a magnificently restored 1905 stable from the Great Estates era, highlights the history of the local area, the revolutionary transition from carriages to cars, and the importance of the horse in Western American culture. Volunteers learn about a unique piece of local history, meet interesting people, and work in a beautiful location.

And even more events for the whole family…Saturday, November 4, 1-3pm, San Pedro Valley Park: Apex Predators Workshop- An apex predator is a predator residing at the top of a food chain upon which no other creatures prey. This event is great for families with children 7 years and older. Learn more about apex predators, followed by a hands on activity making animal track casts and a short nature hike.
Sunday, November 12, 8am, Edgewood Park: Bird Walk- Join Friends of Edgewood docent and birder Gina Barton for a hike through oak woodlands and natural meadows. Look and listen for California Thrasher, Wrentit, Oak Titmouse, Red-shouldered hawk, Western Bluebirds and many more. This three to four-mile hike lasts three to four hours and traverses gentle hills. Meet at the Bill and Jean Lane Education Center.
Saturday, November 18, 3-5pm, San Pedro Valley Park: Live Bats with Corky Quirk- Back by popular demand, Corky Quirk, the founder and executive director of NorCal Bats will return with her live bats to provide a close encounter with these fascinating creatures. This event is brought to you by the Friends of San Pedro Valley Park.
Looking forward to seeing you in a park,
