San Mateo County Agriculture Production Shows $7.2 Million Uptick
For a second consecutive year, San Mateo County gross agricultural values showed an uptick over the previous year, with a $6.1 million increase in indoor floral and nursery crops and more than $2 million gain in vegetable crops, according to the 2017 Agricultural Crop Report. Agricultural Commissioner Fred Crowder presented the annual report to the Board of Supervisors at its July 24 meeting.The County's Ag Department compiles crop statistics and publishes the annual report for use by government agencies, the agricultural industry and other interested parties. County of San Mateo Marks August as Child Support Awareness Month
Early efforts by the County of San Mateo’s Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) have collected more than $32 million this fiscal year but — more importantly — helped parents avoid the court process by agreeing to a support order and following through on child support payments. The County is currently marking August as Child Support Awareness Month but the work by DCSS to support more than 9,500 children and families is year-round. Early Start to Wildfire Season a Reminder to be Prepared, Sign Up for Emergency Alerts
California’s wildfire season has started earlier than usual this year. The state can expect "elevated fire potential" for the balance of the summer, according to the federal government's National Interagency Fire Center’s monthly forecast. San Mateo County Fire and other local fire departments are on the front lines, providing assistance to protect and save lives and property. If a wildfire requires evacuation in San Mateo County and time allows, emergency managers will use the SMC Alert system. Grand Opening Scheduled for New Half Moon Bay Library
San Mateo County Libraries and partners — the County of San Mateo and City of Half Moon Bay — recently announced that after two years of construction and many years of diligent planning and development, the new Half Moon Bay Library is nearly ready to open its doors. The entire community is invited to attend the Grand Opening on August 18 to celebrate and explore the 22,000 square feet, two-story Coastside library. The new library will feature expanded programming and services, including library collections, literacy services, job training, wellness workshops, cutting-edge technology, modern work spaces, and more.
