“Emergency Wartime Preparedness After Pearl Harbor”
At the beginning of World War II, as the Allies were losing the fight, the United States was not certain of the sympathies of the countries of Latin American. In fact the influence of the Axis powers seemed to be growing. About a year before America’s entry into the conflict, President Franklin Roosevelt asked Nelson Rockefeller to coordinate an “Inter-American Affairs” office whose primary function was to counter the propaganda being generated by Germany and Italy with films, advertising and radio broadcasts.
In California, the Director of this office was Carl S. Dentzel. His son, archivist and historian Paul Dentzel, will present a show and tell of his father’s memorabilia and describe his work at the San Mateo County History Museum on July 21st at 1 p.m.
The speaker will describe how this office not only succeeded in assisting the winning over of Latin America to the Allied cause through its information services, but how it also improved economic relations throughout the Americans. Paul will share his father’s personal letters, government documents, photographs and newspaper clippings as he explains the crucial nature of this work.
The office was abolished after the War, in 1946. Carl S. Dentzel went on to serve as the Director of the Southwest Museum, now a part of the Autry Museum of American West in Los Angeles.
This presentation is part of the History Museum’s Courthouse Docket program, which takes place within the building’s historic “Courtroom A.”
