Man Who Pointed Taser at SFO Travelers Gets Probation

A man who pleaded no contest last year to pointing a stun gun at people’s heads in San Francisco International Airport was sentenced to three years’ probation Wednesday, prosecutors said.

Eddie Tin Bui, 27, of Oakland, was found at the airport at about 1:30 a.m. on June 5 pointing a red Taser at people’s heads.

The Taser resembled a real gun, leading victims to fear they would be shot, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

After airport police arrested Bui, they concluded he had mental health issues and was paranoid that people were following him, prosecutors said.

On Sept. 3, he pleaded no contest to felony use of a stun gun in a public building.

Prosecutors asked Judge Mark Forcum to sentence Bui to a year in jail, but Forcum instead sentenced him to 33 days in jail and three years’ probation, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Wednesday.

Bui already had 33 days’ credit for time served and must serve no more jail time in this case, Wagstaffe said.

Bui’s defense attorney, David Franklin, declined to comment on the case.
