I was born in Mexico City and immigrated to the United States at the age of 4 ½years old. My maternal grandmother died of metastatic cancer when I was thirteen years old, an event which motivated me to become a doctor. I have been committed to serving others through medicine and education ever since.

I attended California public schools then graduated with Honors from Stanford University; pursued my Doctor of Medicine in Southern California; then interned and completed residencies at University of Southern California Los Angeles and University of California, San Francisco Medical Centers. I became a Clinical Instructor at UCSF Medical Center in 1992 and am currently a Clinical Professor of Pathology at UCSF in the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry and have an appointment as well at Samuel Merritt University in the California School of Podiatric Medicine in Oakland. I am also a founding member of The Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators since 2001.

I have extensive experience in counseling, advising, mentoring, and teaching health allied students at UCSF and other institutions, which translates to my understanding of what we need to be doing to educate children at an early age to prepare them for the future. As an instructor for the core curriculum during the first 2 years of medical, dentistry and podiatric schools, I have an in depth understanding of the curricular needs for health professional students. I have received numerous teaching awards from medical, dental, podiatric and pharmacy students. I have become a staunch and vocal advocate for increasing the support for struggling and underrepresented health professional students. I have developed, implemented and taught review courses to help students prepare for State Medical Licensure Examinations. My areas of research have included chemical carcinogenesis, AIDS-associated lymphoma and prion diseases.

My children have been educated in San Bruno schools. In 2009, I was elected to the Board of Trustees in San Bruno Park School District where I have served two terms, contributing to educational policy formulation and adoption, school district budget development and approval, and evaluation and hiring superintendents of the San Bruno Park School District. During my tenure, the District has received numerous awards and grants.

Since being on the San Bruno Park School District Governing Board, I have been involved in restoring monies back to the “classroom” with increasing state revenues, continue to support cost efficiencies with support and advice from the San Mateo County of Education, leveraging public funds wisely to insure the fiscal solvency of the school district, supporting adoption and implementation of the California Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, funding a progressive Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), and the hiring of two superintendents.

Of significance to be a good and thoughtful board member and taking seriously holding the position of Trustee, I have participated in the Masters in Governance Program sponsored by the California School Board Association to improve and increase effective school board governance and school consolidation as part of the long-term Schools with Tomorrow Inside district initiative.

I seek election to a third term on the school board because I want to continue contributing strong leadership to the Board in the adoption of progressive and effective district budgets to support increased student educational achievement, strong commitment to the rebuilding and remodeling of our current schools (I support Measure X), continue to attract and retain teachers and staff, and support the transformational work of our current superintendent and her team.

My life’s work in education, demonstrated commitment to helping the underserved, and continued presence on the Governing Board, will help ensure the best educational experiences for all San Bruno children. I would appreciate your vote.
