REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The Caldwell Gallery presents

“Pathways” – touching community and solitude

Through Printmaking and Acrylic Painting, Celina Paul explores a delicate line between creating those tender and nourishing threads of community and seeking that beautiful and adventurous solitude which feeds her creativity.

There is so much learning about the natural world that surrounds us, and the subterranean systems that support the natural beauty we enjoy. Exploring and noting those systems that are collaborative and symbiotic in nature is one of her recurring themes. Noting where there are those threads through the natural world that may be a different type of intelligence, one we, as humans haven’t learned to measure. Pathways is inspired by her exploration and research about these systems.

She builds her paintings in twenty to thirty thin layers of texture, medium and color, relying on the interaction between color and light to push a depth that is new and restorative. Her paintings, as well as her woodblocks resonate with the dual tension and nourishment she feels with creating community and experiencing open spaces and solitude.

Having grown up in Santa Barbara, Ca, Celina developed a love of the sea, wild ocean breezes and picturesque water bodies. She formalized her love of art with a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and a minor in Environmental Studies from California State University, Chico.

The Community Gallery, located on the lower level of the Hall of Justice building will be showing “An Affair with Abstraction” a collection of paintings by Atherton artist Mona Lisa Safai from July 5 to August 30, 2018.

Mona L. Safai describes her artwork style as Abstract Minimalist.

Initially, she took an interest in digital fine art and photography. While she enjoyed the endless possibilities between technology and art, she felt she needed more. Safai continued her artistic journey from the computer monitor to the canvas.

No sooner had she placed a stroke on the canvas that she realized she was destined to work with palette knives. They would become her fierce allies. Next came her discovery of color.

She uses color, texture, and composition to explore the human condition. Color radiates and vibrates through our world quietly, sometimes loudly but always constant. The vibrant arrays of colors convey the world’s most intimate moments to the most remembered in history. Often, colors find a way to signify and create something meaningful for us.

Safai uses color as a language to capture emotions in the experience of the mind’s imagination and spirit.

She thinks of her artwork as stories, waiting for the characters to reveal their colors to begin speculation, awareness, and eventually freedom.

She gives her viewers an emotional experience into a world of their making, not one made for them.

The Rotunda Gallery, located at the entrance of 555 County Center just across the plaza from The Hall of Justice, will be showing the sculptural works of artist Ruth von Jahnke Waters.

Fifty-nine years in sculpture and nearly 40 years in arts administration have come together for Ruth Waters, founder and executive director of the Peninsula Museum of Art, now located in Burlingame and serving the Greater Bay Area.

A Seattle native, Waters graduated from Stanford University in 1955 and started working in hardwoods in 1957 (her mediums now include bronze, marble, constructed room-size sculpture, and painting).

Founder and director of the 1870 Art Center in Belmont (1977 - 2012), she was also founder of the Peninsula Chapter of Women’s Caucus for Art, co-founder of the Peninsula Sculptors’ Guild, co-founder of the Peninsula Arts Council, and former member of the Women’s Caucus for Art National Board.

“I sculpt primarily in the classic subtractive mode, using mallet (or maul) on hardwood logs and blocks of marble. Bronzes are cast from molds taken of wood pieces (editions are limited to 10). Large works, usually constructed of redwood timbers to create enclosures that incorporate carved marble, invite the viewer to walk inside the sculpture.

By and large, my sculptures are commentaries on humanity, observations of individuals, and reflections on universal truths.

I invite the viewer into my world.”

The exhibit will run until from July 6 to Dec 31, 2018.
