REDWOOD CITY, CA. – The Caldwell Gallery presents “Recovery Happens”. Recovery Month celebrates people who have reclaimed their lives through recovery from substance use and mental health conditions and honors the greater community that makes recovery possible.

“Join the Voices for Recovery, Invest in Health, Home, Purpose and Community.”

This year’s national theme encourages communities to join the voices for recovery by investing in health, home, purpose and community. It highlights the ways integrated care, a strong sense of community, sense of purpose and leadership all play a role in recovery.

The annual observance will highlight inspiring stories that help people from all walks of life find the path to hope, health, and wellness, and will bring together more than 35 community organizations, local businesses, San Mateo County Health System’s Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS), and over 600 people in the recovery community for a number of events. EXHIBITION: “Breathing Space”

By clients of Abilities United in Palo Alto.

DATES: September 4 – October 30, 2018

LOCATION: Community Gallery, Lower Floor Hall of Justice 400 County Center, Redwood City

The Community Gallery, on the lower level of 400 County Center, presents “Breathing Space” from September 3 through October 30. Featuring the work of six Abilities United artists living in the San Mateo County, the exhibition explores how artists use the lens of their experiences to explore and interpret the wider world. Michael Broadhurst, Chelsey Fineberg, and Joseph Omolayole each create paintings that explore animals, places, and feelings associated with relaxation. Whether it's an exciting trip to Africa or a quiet morning alone their artwork portrays themes in an array of stunning colors and styles.

While Michael Broadhurst’s work depicts a utopic world where humans, nature, animals, and imaginary creatures live in harmony, Joseph Omolayole explores the poetry of symbols related to the circle of seasons and the passage of time. Chelsey Fineberg combines abstraction, geometric shapes, and text into colorful vignettes of her reality, populated with rainbow animals and multicolored objects. Newcomers Maria Elena Arreola, Jerome Smith, and Maritza Velasco bring their worlds to life with bold colors and enthusiastic brush strokes.

Abilities United is a Palo Alto-based nonprofit serving children and adults with developmental and other disabilities, and their families, living in the Bay Area.

Since its inception, Abilities United has offered people of all ages and abilities educational, therapeutic, recreational and vocational experiences to help them lead meaningful lives and resource connections that make it easier for them to lead the lives they chose.

As we have evolved from a sheltered environment to one of community inclusion, our neighbors can see that indeed, each individual has abilities and together we strengthen our community.

Since 2000, the mission of the Art Program at Abilities United is to provide artists of all abilities and backgrounds access to the Bay Area art community by exhibiting and selling their work. Abilities United artists receive one hundred percent of the proceeds from art sales. People from all walks of life, including art collectors and corporate executives, have purchased and supported our artists.
