📰 News we're reading

• San Bruno Faces Additional VLF Funding Shortfall (ca.gov) — San Bruno is bracing for an unexpected additional $2.6 million loss in state vehicle license fee replacement funding, on top of cuts already built into this year's budget. City leaders warn this could mean eliminating up to 16 General Fund positions, further affecting police, fire, infrastructure work, and programs for vulnerable residents. The city is working with San Mateo County and other cities to push for a long-term legislative fix.

• How nearly 2 million California homes must adjust landscaping under just-approved wildfire rule (fresnobee.com) — New statewide wildfire rules will affect some neighborhoods on the flanks of San Bruno Mountain, requiring a five-foot "Zone 0" buffer free of most flammable materials around homes. The regulations, rolling out over the next five years, target high fire-risk areas and will eventually require changes like noncombustible fencing near houses and stricter maintenance of plants, roofs, and gutters.

• New effort to save National Archives sites in 3 U.S. cities, including San Bruno (nbcbayarea.com subscription) — San Bruno's National Archives facility, home to a million cubic feet of historical records, is at risk of permanent closure under a Trump-era plan. Bay Area Rep. Kevin Mullin, other members of Congress, and local advocates are pushing back, arguing these irreplaceable immigration and family-history documents must stay accessible here. Community members are organizing petitions, letter campaigns, and new legislation to keep the archives open.
