Real-Life Robbers May Have Set 'Pokémon Go' Digital Trap in San Bruno: Police
Police believe two thieves may have planted a "digital lure" in town.

San Bruno, CA – A duo possibly targeting players of the popular 'Pokémon Go' game may have set a trap in San Bruno, police say.
According to San Bruno Police Lt. Troy Fry, officers got word of a robbery late Wednesday night in the 800 block of San Mateo Avenue-- where a gathering of Pokémon players was located.
"A subsequent investigation revealed that a 'digital arena' existed at the location of the crime," Foy said. "Subjects in the immediate area were seeking to locate this spot while playing the game."

In the area was a man who was not actually playing the game, but was indeed looking down at his phone, Fry said. It was that man who was suddenly assaulted, and robbed of his cell phone and wallet around 11:10 p.m.
"The victim in this case was not playing the Pokémon game, but he was looking at his phone immediately prior to being assaulted," according to Fry.

The lieutenant says it's possible that the suspects drew potential victims to the area.
"Investigators are looking into the possibility that the suspects in this case may have planted a 'digital lure' at this specific location in the hopes of coming across a potential victim," he said.
"Patrol Officers have observed a large number of people participating in the Pokémon game," the lietenant added. "Those playing this game are being encouraged to continuously be aware of their surroundings and to seek locations accompanied by a friend."
The suspects in this case are described as having thin builds and wearing hooded sweatshirts and dark clothing. Anyone with any information pertaining to this investigation is urged to contact the San Bruno Police Department at (650) 616-7100.
