Mullin’s Temp Tag Bill Moves on to Appropriations Committee

Sacramento – Speaker pro Tem Kevin Mullin’s (D-San Mateo) temporary license plate bill has been approved by the Assembly Transportation Committee on a 16-0 vote, receiving full bipartisan support and now moves on to the Appropriations Committee.

Currently the State of California is the only state in the country that allows cars to drive without a license plate on their vehicle for as long as 90 days, posing a public safety risk and allowing motorists to evade tolls throughout the state.

“Establishing a temporary license plate program will improve public safety and allow for the collection of millions of dollars in lost revenue as a result of drivers without plates evading tolls,” said Mullin. “Existing technology makes its implementation as simple as the dealer having an internet connection and a printer,” Mullin added.

Representatives from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, the California Police Chiefs Association and other law enforcement associations testified in support of the bill.

The next stop in the approval process is the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
