The artists, who are in first through sixth grade, were asked to illustrate the theme “The Wild Side of SamTrans.” This is the 14th year that SamTrans has partnered with the San Mateo County Office of Education to sponsor the contest, which engages students in the classroom and emphasizes arts in the community.
More than 150 submissions were received this year from 18 schools throughout San Mateo County. A panel comprised of members from the San Mateo County Arts Commission selected the winning contestants.
The students, accompanied by their families and teachers, were honored by the Board of Directors before the unveiling of a special SamTrans bus featuring the students’ works of art. All of the winning entries are featured on ad cards inside SamTrans buses and on the outside of the Art Bus, which will operate in regular SamTrans service for the next year. The winning entries are also posted on the SamTrans website.
The winning artists received a SamTrans Summer Youth Pass, a framed copy of the bus ad card showcasing their art and SamTrans goodies. Their teachers received a gift certificate for arts supplies.
