Congresswoman Speier to Participate in Naturalization Ceremony in Honor of Project Preserving Immigrant Family Histories
SAN MATEO, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo counties) will join the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to hold a special naturalization ceremony to honor the completion of the San Bruno Compaction Project on May 29, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the San Bruno Public Library. The San Bruno Compaction Project was implemented to preservealien files or A-Files, a collection of immigration and family history documents. The files are of particular importance to the Asian American communities of the Bay Area as they document the cases of hundreds of thousands of immigrants from China, Japan, the Philippines and other Asian countries.
“As a country of immigrants, this is a fitting way for us to celebrate the preservation of historic documents of former immigrants and at the same time create documents for brand new citizens of the United States,” said Speier. “Immigration is the foundation of the American Dream. That was true in the past and will be true in the future.”

Twelve individuals from nine countries will be sworn in as U.S. citizens at the event.
Congresswoman Speier continued the work of former Congressman Tom Lantos to keep the records in the Bay Area and to make them a permanent part of the National Archives. The collection will be housed in the Leo J. Ryan Federal Building in San Bruno which is currently under construction.
