SAN BRUNO CA POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE
July 5, 2018
SUBJECT: 4th of July Enforcement Detail
DATE OCCURRED: July 4, 2017
TIME OCCURRED: 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
CONTACT PERSON: Lieutenant Ryan Johansen
On Tuesday, July 4, 2018, the San Bruno Police Department conducted an illegal fireworks enforcement operation as part of its continued effort to ensure that the many people that spend their 4th of July in San Bruno could do so safely.
During the days leading up to the July 4th Holiday, Police Department personnel visited locations where problems had arisen in previous years. Officers spoke with residents about the use of illegal fireworks, including enforcement efforts, penalties for the possession and use, and the danger these items pose to the community.
The Police Department had 57 department personnel on hand for the 4th of July Holiday and conducted proactive enforcement of illegal fireworks violations in addition to responding to citizen complaints. The department responded to fireworks related complaints and 25 arrests were made for the possession and/or use of illegal fireworks. Those arrested were released after being issued an administrative citation. The penalty for receiving an administrative citation for the possession/use of illegal fireworks is a $1,000 fine. A total of approximately 415 pounds of illegal fireworks were seized and one additional arrest was made for the possession of a loaded firearm and a controlled substance.

Illegal fireworks, including firecrackers, bottle rockets, aerials, mortars, M-1000’s, roman candles and others present an obvious public safety hazard as they can cause personal injury and significant damage to property. Additionally, the extreme noise associated with most illegal fireworks can be very disruptive to other 4th of July revelers, and can cause serious distress to family pets.
The report on Tuesday evening will include that of the 25 administrative citations issued yesterday, 8 were issued to San Bruno residents.
The San Bruno Police Department remains committed to a proactive approach to combat the possession and use of illegal fireworks within City limits.
