The San Bruno Police Department recognizes that potent synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, pose a high risk to drug users, members of the public, and first responders alike. Furthermore, the Department is aware that Naloxone Hydrochloride, also known as Narcan, can help to prevent fatal opioid overdoses.
In an effort to ensure the safety of residents and police personnel, the San Bruno Police Department has purchased, and will issue Naloxone Hydrochloride to sworn personnel in the field. Naloxone is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. San Bruno Police Training Officers are partnering with San Bruno Fire Department Personnel to administer training that will better equip officers to detect the symptoms of an opioid overdose and administer Naloxone in the event of an opioid exposure. Law enforcement officers can be exposed to fentanyl through skin contact or inhalation of airborne particles while performing their daily duties. Therefore, all sworn personnel will carry Naloxone to assist the public and first responders when necessary.
The San Bruno Police Department policy has been developed and the Naloxone Hydrochloride has already been acquired. It is expected to be deployed in the coming weeks upon the completion of the associated training program. In September of 2016, the San Bruno Police Department equipped each of its patrol vehicles with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). The issuance of Naloxone Hydrochloride to personnel in the field serves to further enhance an officer’s ability to respond to a medical
emergency. Fire Department and Emergency Medical Personnel are clearly the best equipped and best trained to respond to medical related calls for service. The steps being taken by the San Bruno Police Department are intended to provide officers the ability to serve as a critical bridge until Emergency Medical Personnel arrive on scene.
The Department will continue to seek opportunities to enhance the safety of officers in the field and to provide for the safety of the public it serves on a daily basis.
