On Friday, September 25, 2015, the San Bruno Police Officers responded to a report of a theft from an ATM that occurred at the Bank of America, located at 465 San Mateo Avenue in San Bruno. A subsequent investigation revealed that a female suspect approached a subject using an exterior ATM machine. During the victim’s ATM transaction the suspect engaged the victim in conversation. After the victim completed their transaction they noticed the suspect approach the ATM quickly and initiate a transaction. The victim later discovered that their account was compromised.
The suspect is described as an African American female adult, approximately 5’5” tall, approximately 30 to 40 years of age, with short “tied back” hair, and wearing a white Giants shirt.
ATM theft is also known as “Shoulder Surfing.” This occurs when a suspect attempts to retrieve a victim’s access information while the victim is engaged in a transaction at an ATM. After the victim completes the transaction, the suspect accesses the account and withdraws money from the victim’s account. This can occur at ATMs that do not automatically end transactions with the removal of the account card. If the transaction is not terminated, the account can still be accessed with the PIN (even without the card).
Suggested tips to mitigate this type of theft include:
Use ATMs in well-lit, populated areas. Indoor ATMs at banks tend to be safest. Be aware of your surroundings when using the ATM. If you see a person loitering in the area for no apparent reason, go to another location.
Should you observe suspicious activity during your transaction, cancel your transaction, remove your card, immediately leave the area and contact the Police Department.

Safeguard information (PINs, passwords, etc.) when entering it into the ATM, shielding the information from view with your hand or other objects.
At the completion of your transaction, remember to logout or end the transaction completely and remove your ATM (some ATMs do not end the transaction by simply removing the card).
If the transaction requires bank slips, complete these forms prior to going to the ATM
