SBCF and YouTube/Google.Org
Partner on Community Grants Fund
2017-2018 Awards to be Considered at December 6 Board Meeting
At its meeting on December 6, 2017, the Foundation's Board of Directors will consider approving grant awards totaling $300,000 to local community organizations for 23 projects that benefit the San Bruno community. In its second year of offering the Community Grants Fund, the Foundation is providing $200,000 of its own funds for projects that will take place in 2018. The Foundation is also thrilled to announce that YouTube/Google.Org has contributed $100,000 to the Community Grants Fund, increasing the dollar amount of grants to be awarded by 50 percent.
Through the Community Grants Fund, the Foundation is utilizing investment proceeds from a portion of the restitution funds resulting from the City of San Bruno’s settlement with Pacific Gas & Electric Company following the 2010 gas pipeline explosion that devastated San Bruno’s Crestmoor neighborhood to invest in local organizations that form the lifeblood of the San Bruno community. This year, YouTube/Google.Org’s generous contribution allows the program to fund nine more projects than it supported in its first cycle.

SBCF and YouTube Launch Pedestrian Safety Initiative
The Foundation and YouTube - in collaboration with the City of San Bruno and the San Bruno Park School District - launched an initiative to improve pedestrian safety in San Bruno. Using grant funding totaling $263,952 from the Foundation and YouTube, the City will install rectangular rapid flashing beacons near two San Bruno public schools and in San Bruno's downtown area.
At a November 28, 2017, groundbreaking ceremony at the crosswalk in front of Portola Elementary School - the location of the first flashing beacon installation - San Bruno leaders, including (pictured above, from left) Foundation Executive Director Leslie Hatamiya, San Bruno Park School District Superintendent Stella Kemp, YouTube Director of Real Estate & Workplace Services Drew Sherwood, Mayor Jim Ruane, City of San Bruno Director of Public Services Jimmy Tan, Foundation Board Member Patricia Bohm, San Bruno City Manager Connie Jackson, and two Portola students, celebrated the beginning of the Pedestrian Safety Initiative. The announcement was covered by the San Mateo Daily Journal in a November 29 article.
