Community Grants Fund Awards and Partnership with YouTube/Google.Org Announced
For the 2017-2018 cycle, the San Bruno Community Foundation is awarding Community Grants totaling $300,000 to local organizations for 23 projects that benefit the San Bruno community. The Foundation is pleased to partner on the Community Grants Fund with YouTube/Google.Org, which has provided $100,000 of the grant funds being distributed this year.
The Foundation Board approved the grants at its December 6, 2017, Board meeting. “For the second year in a row, we are delighted to support a wide range of community organizations doing important and meaningful work to benefit the people of San Bruno, such as Project Read’s literacy programs for low-income San Bruno parents and children, Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center’s health promotion efforts to combat diabetes in San Bruno’s Pacific Islander community, and CORA's support services for victims of domestic violence,” said Foundation President Nancy Kraus. “We are so grateful to YouTube/Google.Org – true community partners in San Bruno – as their generosity enables the Foundation to offer an additional $100,000 in grants to many worthy organizations that serve a diverse cross-section of the San Bruno community.”
“YouTube is proud to call San Bruno our home. We are very excited to join the San Bruno Community Foundation by helping to fund the most innovative efforts across the city,” said Adrian Schurr, Bay Area Giving Manager for Google.Org. “This community grant initiative helps ensure the community’s voice is heard.”
Representatives of many of the grantees attended the Board meeting and thanked the Board for offering the grant program and for its consideration in the selection process.

The Crestmoor Scholarship honors the community members who most directly endured the destruction of the 2010 gas pipeline explosion and resulting fire and especially in memory of the eight San Bruno residents who lost their lives in the disaster.
High school seniors headed to college and community college students planning to transfer to a four-year college in the fall of 2018 are eligible to apply. Applicants must live or attend a high school or community college located in San Bruno.
Scholarship recipients must demonstrate, as the top criteria, deep engagement and involvement in the San Bruno community. Other factors that will be considered during the selection process include, in no particular order, an applicant's financial need, extracurricular activities, academic record, and examples of leadership, teamwork, and collaboration.

Foundation Honors Retiring City Leaders
On December 6, Foundation Board recognized retiring San Bruno City leaders for their support of the Foundation and their years of dedicated service to the San Bruno community. Speaking on behalf of the Board, President Nancy Kraus said, "As we always try to remind ourselves and the public of the sad circumstances which led to the formation of the San Bruno Community Foundation, we rarely acknowledge those who fought to acquire the restitution funds making the Foundation possible. Tonight, we have that opportunity. The work of this team of dedicated public servants we are honoring is why we sit here today as directors of a foundation tasked with making a difference for the San Bruno community."

The elected officials' terms concluded on December 12, 2017. Ms. Jackson and Ms. Burns previously announced their retirements in early 2018.
December Board Meeting Summary
The Board of Directors of the San Bruno Community Foundation held its regular monthly meeting on December 6, 2017, at the San Bruno Senior Center. In addition to approving the Community Grants Fund awards and recognizing retiring City leaders, the Board received various committee reports, including:
Report on First Responder Effectiveness Strategic Initiative: On behalf of the Ad Hoc Committee on First Responder Effectiveness Strategic Initiative, Vice President Frank Hedley reminded the Board of the Committee's charge to develop a package of program enhancements that would bolster the effectiveness of the City of San Bruno’s first responders in a meaningful way and that the City is unable to support through the General Fund. He reported on the Committee's deliberations and its decision to build the initiative around three core projects that would positively impact the Police and Fire Departments in fundamental and meaningful ways, at an approximate budget target of $158,000: (a) emergency shelter supplies (led by the Fire Department), (b) critical facilities site assessments, incident action plans, and joint public safety training (collaboration of the Police and Fire Departments), and (c) police officer mindfulness, compassion, and resiliency training. Fire Chief Dave Cresta, Police Commander Geoff Caldwell, and Police Chief Ed Barberini then presented the three projects in more detail, describing the need for the projects, how they would be implemented, estimated costs, and potential sustainability. The Board had a robust and thoughtful discussion of the projects and directed the Committee to return in early 2018 with a concrete proposal for Board consideration and approval.
Report on Grant Projects with the City: On behalf of the Ad Hoc Committee on Program Strategy Development, President Nancy Kraus provided a brief update on the status of four projects on which the Foundation is partnering with the City of San Bruno:
- Pedestrian Safety Initiative: On November 28, the Foundation held a groundbreaking for installation of flashing beacons at the crosswalk in front of Portola Elementary School on Amador Avenue. Portola is the first site of several sets of flashing beacons near schools and in the downtown area that the City is installing with the support of the Foundation and YouTube. The Foundation is contributing $137,952 to this effort to improve pedestrian safety in San Bruno, while YouTube is covering $126,000 of the cost. The San Mateo Daily Journal covered the groundbreaking.
- Florida Avenue Park: The Foundation has committed $200,000 to the City’s plans to build a new neighborhood park on Florida Avenue. Because the City has already spent in excess of $200,000 designing the park, the Foundation will be disbursing the grant to the City per terms of earlier approved grant agreement, once the City has submitted a report detailing the costs thus far on the project.
- Recreation and Aquatic Center: The Foundation has expressed its interest in donating $50 million to the City to build a new recreation and pool facility. At its last meeting, the Board approved a grant of up to $550,000 of the $50 million to fund the conceptual design stage of this multifaceted project. On December 12 the City Council will consider a recommendation of the architectural firm that will manage the conceptual design stage for the City.
- Community Day 2017: The Foundation has received the City’s grant report for Community Day 2017, which was funded by a grant from the Foundation of up to $30,000, a sponsorship from Skyline College to the City in the amount of $5,000 and $15,000 in restricted donations to the Foundation to support Community Day ($10,000 from Walmart and $5,000 from YouTube). Upon the recommendation of the Committee, the Board then approved a grant of up to $30,000 to support Community Day 2018 and again agreed to accept restricted donations for Community Day in support of the City's event.
Report on Other Programs (Crestmoor Scholarship and Music Education Strategic Initiative): Program Consultant Stephanie Rutgers announced that the 2018 Crestmoor Neighborhood Memorial Scholarship is set to launch the week of December 11, when the online application will be accessible and updated marketing materials will be distributed to local schools and throughout the community. The application deadline is March 14, 2018. No significant changes have been made to the program this cycle, but staff will continue to improve outreach efforts to attract more applicants. Executive Director Leslie Hatamiya reported that implementation of the Music Education Strategic Initiative to bolster music education in San Bruno's public schools is proceeding on schedule. The steering committee, headed by Bryan Vander Lugt of the San Bruno Education Foundation, is planning a spring concert and fundraiser as part of the effort to ensure that the music education enhancements are sustainable once SBCF funding sunsets at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.
Report from the Investment Committee: Investment Committee Chair Tim Ross reported that the Committee held its quarterly meeting on November 15, 2017. He summarized the report the Committee received from Sand Hill Global Advisors LLC (SHGA), the Foundation's investment adviser, and reminded Board members of the asset mix of the Foundation's two main pools of investment funds: (1) the Quasi-Endowment, with a long-term investment horizon, is positioned more aggressively with a higher percentage of equity holdings, while (2) the Stategic Pool, with a shorter time horizon, is positioned more conservatively with a larger percentage of fixed income holdings. He also reminded the Board that minor fluctuations in the value of the portfolio are reasonable and to be expected.
