San Bruno, CA. November 2, 2017. The work to implement the Schools with Tomorrow Inside vision for San Bruno Park School District is launched! A diverse committee of eleven members from the school community (7-11 Facilities Committee) began the challenging but exciting task Monday evening to arrive at a recommendation for school consolidation – a decision that will enable the District to begin the process for modernization and rebuilding of our schools into centers for teaching and learning to better prepare San Bruno children for a 21st Century global economy and workplace.

Facilitated by Marilyn Cleveland, Esq., a noted expert in school property, construction, and bond matters, the Committee’s work began with a presentation from Superintendent Dr. Kemp on creating Schools with Tomorrow Inside - one that serves San Bruno children for generations to come. Her vision for 21st Century teaching and learning focuses on the District’s vision that it will “engage and inspire our students to be productive critical thinkers who embrace diversity, curiosity and innovation throughout their lives”, and supports the District’s Strategic Plan goals to implement 21st Century learning strategies and methodologies to ensure academic and personal success for all students while maintaining fiscal solvency.

The District’s goal to have a net $5,200,000 in savings by 2020 is in process beginning with $1,200,000 savings for 2017-2018. To reach this goal, the considerable cost savings can be achieved by relieving the burden on the District’s budget to maintain antiquated schools, serving small populations of students. California funds its schools on a per student basis which encourages school districts to enroll larger numbers of students in a school to take advantage of the efficiencies gained from this funding formula. The average size of an elementary school in California is between 500-600 students. San Bruno Park has six elementary schools with enrollment averages around 300. This is not cost efficient in today’s school funding model. Consolidation of six into four elementary schools is the decision the 7-11 Committee will be recommending.

Consolidating, modernizing and building new schools for San Bruno Park Elementary children is not only the answer to alleviating stress on the budget, it is the answer for putting San Bruno Park School District on the map as the gateway to the world for teaching and learning in our global economy. The 7-11 Committee, chaired by parent and engineer Wendy Al-Mukdad, will explore all ramifications of school consolidation including thoughtful assessment of conditions at the six elementary school campuses. During this process, the committee may visit recently modernized area elementary school campuses to better understand what Schools with Tomorrow Inside may look like for our community. The Committee expects to provide the public with a draft recommendation in January 2018. A public hearing will be held at the January 2018 board meeting, and the committee will present a final recommendation to the Board of Trustees in February regarding the consolidation, a decision that will launch the next chapter to provide improved and safe campuses to better serve the children in San Bruno.

Concurrently, Superintendent Dr. Kemp has engaged a group of stakeholders forming the Facilities Education Visioning Group, charged with making recommendations related to the school campus needs for 21st Century teaching and learning. Their input will assist the 7-11 Committee in better envisioning the needs for new, modern campuses, and support the pre-bond planning team to examine financing strategies to help accomplish the District’s vision for education in San Bruno.

“I am excited to be leading the District at this critical juncture in its history and gratified by the interest from the community in supporting Schools with Tomorrow Inside for San Bruno children”, commented Dr. Kemp.
