SEPTEMBER IS ATTENDANCE MATTERS MONTH IN SAN BRUNO
SAN BRUNO, CA. September 13, 2017. Mayor Jim Ruane, with support from San Bruno City Council gave a big boost to San Bruno Park School District’s new Attendance Matters Initiative with a Proclamation that September in San Bruno is Attendance Matters Month. The Proclamation was presented to Superintendent Dr. Stella Kemp at the September 12th City Council meeting, recognizing that every school day counts in the life of a child and commending the District for providing learning opportunities for San Bruno youth which cannot be replaced when students miss class.

The District launched the initiative to increase attendance above the current 95% average daily attendance. Students lose valuable learning when they miss class and the District loses an average of $40/child in state funding when students are absent. Importantly, research shows that poor attendance patterns formed early in life, lead to students not graduating from high school.
Kicking off the Initiative, each of the seven schools now displays a banner that Attendance Matters Every Day – in Every Way. The banners are funded by San Bruno Education Foundation. A campaign of communication with parents and activities for students around the importance of attendance will be ongoing throughout the year.
