Canepa: San Mateo County First to Accept Diesel Free by ’33 Challenge
Board votes to join Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s challenge to reduce diesel emissions to ‘zero’ by the year 2033
REDWOOD CITY – The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution unanimously today to accept the Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s challenge to public agencies to reduce diesel emissions to “zero” by 2033. The resolution was co-sponsored by supervisors David J. Canepa and Carole Groom.
“We know that diesel emissions are dangerous to the public’s health and directly contribute to climate change,” Supervisor Canepa said. “I’m proud San Mateo County is the first in the Bay Area to embrace this challenge.”

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District, in affiliation with the Governor’s Global Climate Action Summit targeting climate change prevention through reducing greenhouse gas emissions, will hold an event on Sept. 12, 2018, entitled, “United Against GHGs – Diesel Free by ’33.” Additionally, they will hold a Climate Tech Marketplace on Sept. 13, 2018, both taking place at the Bay Area Metro Center in San Francisco during which city and county elected officials and business leaders worldwide will be asked to sign a Statement of Purpose that commits them to going diesel free by the end of 2033.
