Be Seen Keepin’ It Clean
Dear Friends,
I’m pleased to announce our office is sponsoring a cleanup event in Broadmoor Village, Saturday, Aug. 4 starting at 9 a.m. We are looking for more volunteers to help with this important community-building event. This is an opportunity to take pride in your neighborhood and help clean litter in Broadmoor and unincorporated areas of Colma. We will gather at the Broadmoor Community Center at 501 87th St. and spend about three hours with members of the San Mateo County Office of Community Affairs doing some much need trash removal.

Lunch will be provided to working volunteers at the center starting at noon. Special thanks to our co-sponsors the San Mateo County Office of Sustainability, Republic Services and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

I came across this quote recently by entrepreneur Marjorie Moore from St. Louis. “Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” So, what kind of community do we want to live in? I want to live in a community where our neighbors lend a hand to each other in good times and bad. To volunteer, call Tony Bayudan at (650) 363-4565 or email to tbayudan@smcgov.org.

Groundbreaking for new Brisbane Library
I was delighted to join Brisbane Mayor W. Clarke Conway, City Manager Clay Holstein and Friends of the Brisbane Library co-presidents Dawn David and Wendy Towle along with members of the San Mateo County Library System to break the ground on the city’s new state-of-the-art library.

The city will have a brand-new library soon thanks to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approving a $1.7 million low-interest loan at its May 8 meeting. The construction loan is on top of the already $300,000 grant the county provided for the design of the new community-gathering facility.

Construction is expected to before the end of summer. As the demand for library services continues to grow and change, libraries are adapting to meet community needs now and into the future. This new $9.1 million facility will play a crucial role in the ability of library staff to meet customer expectations.

San Mateo County Embraces Age-Friendly Cities Concept
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to join the World Health Organization’s Age-Friendly Global Network and establish the San Mateo County Age Friendly Initiative to be administered by the Health System’s Aging and Adult Services division. The board approved the resolution unanimously that I am co-sponsoring with Supervisor Warren Slocum.

Our cities are about to embark on a grand journey to help our older adults lead happier, more fulfilling and productive lives. More than ever before, older Americans are working longer, trying new things and engaging in their communities. I want to continue this trend to ensure our older adults can age in place, are healthy and safe.

The concept of Global Age-Friendly Cities was developed in 2005 by WHO to help cities consider and implement policies and services to support older adults as they grow older to live healthy and vibrant lives. Population aging and urbanization are two global trends that together comprise major forces shaping the 21st Century, according to WHO.

The Health System will contract with the Center for Age-Friendly Excellence, which spearheaded the campaign in Santa Clara County, to conduct the campaign in San Mateo County. The first phase of the project will include working with Redwood City, Pacifica and Daly City officials on earning the WHO designation.

County Honored for Electronic-Waste Ordinance
The California Resource and Recovery Association honored San Mateo County as its 2018 recipient of the Outstanding Household Hazardous Waste/Universal/Electronic Recycling Award. This award is presented to a business, government agency or community-based organization to recognize innovation and excellence in diverting electronic-waste materials from disposal. I was joined by members of the San Mateo County Office of Sustainability Gordon Tong and Lillian Clark, who helped craft the ordinance that I and Supervisor Dave Pine sponsored. We strengthened our county code to ensure electronic waste is not ship overseas where it is processed in incredibly dangerous situations

San Bruno Mountain Hike a Wonderful Event
I was happy to be joined by members of the San Mateo County Parks Department Saturday, July 28 for a guided tour of San Bruno Mountain with about 50 people in attendance. The mountain is the nearest wilderness to the homes of more than 1 million people with a native ecosystem completely unique to the area.

I was also happy to help cut the ribbon on a new park bench installed at the cross section of the Saddle Loop and Guadalupe trails. Members of San Bruno Mountain Watch helped lead the walking tour through a beautiful eucalyptus grove and mature Cyprus trees that provide refuge to a range of wildlife such as hawks and song birds. It also has the best view of the San Francisco skyline than anywhere in the Bay Area. San Bruno Mountain is truly an urban oasis that too few people get to enjoy. Take the Sharps Survey
Our office has been working with the Health System on a survey regarding residential sharps/needles disposal. It’s a simple 9-question survey that should take about 2 minutes to complete. Completing the survey will help Environmental Health conduct further research on this topic in San Mateo County. Safely disposing of home-generated used sharps is important. Sharps that are not disposed of safely may cause injury. Disposal rules and regulations vary across states and localities. Click here to take the survey.
