The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn the public of imposters making fake phone calls posing as members of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in an attempt to defraud people for personal information and money.
We have received reports from members of the public who have received unsolicited phone calls from individuals who fraudulently claim to be a sworn member of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. They are told they must pay fees for failure to appear for jury duty. The imposter instructs them to pay the fees by purchasing gift cards or prepaid “green dot cards.” They are told if they do not pay they will be subject to arrest.
