Victorian Days at the Old Courthouse

Experience Victorian Days at the San Mateo County History Museum (the Old Courthouse) on Sunday, August 19 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Victorian era was named for Queen Victoria who reigned in Great Britain from 1837 to 1901. On this special free admission day, discover what life was like during the 1800s through craft activities, a tea and fashion show.

Children can make Victorian crafts. To be properly dressed for a Victorian afternoon, kids can design an old-time hat to wear, create a fan and make a toy pocket watch. They will also learn “the code” of using calling cards, popular during the nineteenth century.

The craft activities are designed to assist the kids in enjoying a Victorian Tea in the Museum’s historic Courtroom A. Adults and children are invited to attend one of two sittings: 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. Tea, finger sandwiches, scones and tarts will be served. Reenactors portraying well-to-do Peninsulans of the past will review the etiquette of tea. Each tea will end with a short fashion show featuring outfits from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. The fashion show will also be presented at 1 p.m. without the tea. The tea will cost $5 for adults and $3 for students. To RSVP for the tea, call 650-299-0104, ext. 220 or visit www.historysmc.org/victorian-days-tickets.

Victorian Days is an annual event at the San Mateo County History Museum. It is sponsored by Cypress Lawn Heritage Foundation.
