South Orange County Wrestling Teams Qualify 25 for Masters Meet

Preston Quam spent many years competing in Judo before deciding last year to switch sports in hopes of earning a college scholarship. By the way the San Clemente senior has continued to dominate his competition, scholarship offers should be rolling in.

 A CIF Southern Section champion last year, Quam won the section’s Central Individual Championship at 189 pounds on Feb. 20 at Colony High in Ontario. He won all five of his matches by fall and was selected the meet’s Upper Weight MVP.

Quam and three of his Triton teammates, who also were among the top five finishers in their weights, advance to the section’s Masters Meet on Feb. 25-26 at Temecula Valley High. The top nine finishers at Masters advance to the state meet March 4-5 at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

 Quam finished fifth at the state finals in 2010.

Laguna Hills qualified eight wrestlers for Masters and won its seventh consecutive team championship in Ontario.

In all, 25 wrestlers from 11 South Orange County high schools are taking the next step toward a state championship. Complete results can be found here.
