Plans For San Juan Capistrano's First Skatepark Passed By Council

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA — The San Juan Capistrano City Council approved plans to build the city's first-ever skatepark, answering the decade-long calls of south Orange County skaters and residents to build a skatepark in the city.

The plans were approved at the council's Tuesday meeting, where they considered rezoning the 28-acre piece of land the skatepark is to be built on.

The park will be built at 32681 Alipaz St., a city-owned piece of farmland between the Ecology Center and San Juan Sports Park. It's expected to include a 20,000 square-foot all-wheel skatepark area with obstacles, a playground structure, restroom building and seating.

There will also be access to the adjacent sports park, according to a city staff report.

The entire park project has a budget of roughly $3.2 million. The City of Dana Point is slated to pay $25,000 in annual skatepark maintenance fee, as Dana Point residents are expected to use the park.

Construction for the park is expected to begin July 2022, shortly after a construction contract is awarded.
