Attempted Carjacking In San Leandro Ends In 3 Arrests: Police

The suspects were apparently armed with handguns and rifles when they tried to steal the car, according to police.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — Three armed suspects were arrested after trying to carjack someone in San Leandro Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The victim was at the intersection of Polvorosa Avenue and Doolittle Drive around 2:30 p.m. when the suspects, masked and armed with guns and rifles, pulled up to the area in two different vehicles, according to the San Leandro Police Department.

The suspects tried to carjack the victim, but the victim managed to drive away unharmed and report the crime to the police department, authorities said.

Officers used the Flock public safety cameras to pinpoint the vehicles the suspects were driving, and found at least one of them — a white Mercedes SUV — along 82nd Street in Oakland, police said.

The suspect drove off in the SUV and led police on a chase until they pulled over in the 100 block of Glenwood Glade, police said.

Three people who had been inside the SUV tried running off into a neighborhood near Duncan Way, but were taken into custody following an "extensive" perimeter search, police said.

It's unclear exactly what charges the suspects will face, or if they were all involved in the carjacking attempt. Police did not publicly identify the suspects.
