Dog Dies in San Leandro House Fire

One of the dogs survived and was taken to a veterinarian for care.

A dog died and another survived in a morning fire at a single-family home in San Leandro this morning, an Alameda County Fire Department battalion chief said today. The fire at 538 McKinley Court was first reported at 9:14 a.m., fire officials said. Battalion Chief Jim Call said no one was home at the time of fire except two dogs. Call said a neighbor reported seeing smoke and when fire crews arrived they were able to contain the fire to one bedroom. The crews kept the fire from spreading to the attic.

“Crews made a very good stop,” Call said. Call said San Leandro police transported the surviving dog to a veterinarian for emergency care. Firefighters extinguished the fire at about 9:45 a.m. and neither civilians nor firefighters were injured. A fire investigator is at the home to determine the cause, Call said.

Call didn’t have a dollar value estimate of the damage caused by the fire, but he said the bedroom and its contents were “completely destroyed.”
