Family of San Leandro Teen Killed by Fleeing Suspect Seeking Donations

The family of a 14-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a fleeing suspect east of San Leandro on Tuesday evening is collecting donations online for his memorial. Ivan Cruz of San Leandro was crossing the street in a crosswalk at East 14th Street and Ashland Avenue when a driver of a 2001 maroon Saturn hit him at 6:19 p.m. Tuesday, Alameda County sheriff’s and California Highway Patrol officials said.

The driver was fleeing sheriff’s deputies who tried to pull the Saturn over for reckless driving minutes earlier and continued fleeing after striking Ivan. Ivan was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley but was pronounced dead a short time later, the CHP said.

The driver remains at large but a maroon Saturn suspected to be the one that hit Ivan was recovered by the CHP and impounded as evidence, CHP officials said Wednesday. Ivan’s single mother and two sisters are seeking donations to help alleviate the financial burden of memorial services as they grieve.
