Alco Iron & Metal Company Fire 'Under Control'

The huge fire sent acrid smoke over the East Bay from San Leandro to the Tri-Valley.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A fire that raged for hours at a metal salvage yard in San Leandro is extinguished, according to the Alameda County Fire Department. No injuries were reported. A shelter-in-place order, which was lifted late Tuesday night, was in effect for all of San Leandro west of I-880 between Davis Street & Fairway.

However, the heavy smoke had been blowing to the east and south. Residents as far away as Pleasanton and Livermore report seeing and smelling the smoke.

The fire was reported at the Alco Iron & Metal Company, a recycling operation at Davis Street and Doolittle Drive at 4:49 p.m., according to the Pulsepoint phone application. Alco handles Scrap Metal, Metal Recycling, Scrap Metal Recycling, Metal Sales, Metal Fabrication, Metal Demolition, Metal Scrap, Scrap Metal Yards, Scrap Metal Prices.

Fire crews were expected to remain on the scene to complete overhaul operations and mop up, fire officials said. The PulsePoint app reported a second fire at Wayne Avenue and Williams Street. That was noted at 4:56 p.m. There is no further information regarding that report.
