'Flat Stanley' Found In San Leandro Mailbox

This two-dimensional character used as teaching tool and story-telling exercise has appeared in San Leandro. Be wary: its motives and intentions are unknown.

(Editor's note: A 1964 children's book featuring the character Stanley Lambchop has developed into a teaching and story-telling tool known as the Flat Stanley project. Whether for the first time or as a repeat incursion, this viral phenomenon has reached San Leandro, as Patch learned from the anonymous reader cited below.)

Flat Stanley dropped in through the mail slot at a San Leandro home on Wednesday.  The resident opened an envelope addressed to GrAnnie, unfolded paper arms and legs and there was Flat Stanley!

GrAnnie, who some know as Angela, was also sent information and instructions about Flat Stanley.  Angela’s granddaughter, Kiara Walli, is a third grader in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Her class is reading a Flat Stanley book.

Kiara dressed her Flat Stanley appropriately for a visit to San Leandro and asked her grandmother to take him somewhere fun and take pictures. Angela, who moved to the Bay Area two years ago, is looking forward to sharing her new home with Flat.

Flat needs to go back to Albuquerque with souvenirs, pictures and stories of his trip by February 24.

Flat Stanley’s first outing will be to the San Leandro Main Library Children’s Section to show GrAnnie some of the books written about his travels.

Editor: If you see GrAnnie's Flat Stanley or have been harboring one of these two-dimensional cutouts please upload pictures or share comments on Patch.
