Following Freeway Antics, Chicken Found at Bridge Toll Plaza Drawing Interest

Is this plucky poultry yours? Officials say that in order to claim the overnight sensation, you will need to show proof of ownership.

Interest in a chicken found walking on the Bay Bridge Wednesday morning is rising after California Highway Patrol officers rescued the fowl from traffic.

The CHP starting receiving calls about 6 a.m. to report the incident, which drew jokes and questions on social media, CHP officials said. In the last 36 hours, three different people have called to claim the bird, Oakland Animal Services director Rebecca Katz said. Two of those called today, she said.

“Hey that might be my chicken,” one of the three told Katz by phone. The animal shelter is open from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today and shelter officials will see who claims the bird, Katz said.

Anyone who makes a claim will have to bring proof, Katz said. That may be difficult since the bird has no identifiers on it, such as a tag on its leg, she said. Katz said two rescue groups have also expressed interest in caring for the fowl.

“There’s a lot of interest in this chicken,” she said.
